Web 2.0 - What is it?

For years, I've often wondered at ways to organize the vast amounts of information that exist on the web. Searches on google often yield 1000's of results. How is one to filter through all the information? Web 2.0 helps in this regard.

By leveraging the collective brains of the internet, we can filter the valuable from the worthless. Sites like digg.com and de.licio.us allow users to "tag" content as relevant to them. This "folksonomy" as it is now called allows the vast amounts of data on the web to be filtered by millions of eyes so no one person has to.

While this idea may not be new to frequent web users, those of us stuck inside blue chip, corporate fire walls are often isolated for new and emerging technology outside our "protective" barriers. This needs to change as these technologies will vastly improve the searchability of data in these micro webs that exist inside corporate intranets.

Stay tuned as I embark on a journey to expose the wonders of collective filtering to the insides of a corporate empire.
